There are moments when Spirit works through you and through me that we don’t always take notice of. When things occur as they should or are meant to be and neither of us knows how. They are moments when Spirit speaks and acts or lives through each of us. It is something that I am still learning to be mindful of. It is a phenomenon of this world that assures me of yet another. They are those moments that validate the presence and power of Spirit in our lives. They are the moments of our life when Spirit works through you and through me.
While I have shared a number of those mystical if not miraculous moments with you in my previous writings and books, I thought I would share a couple more recent experiences with you here. They are those moments when if only briefly but magically some greater presence or Spirit has used not just me, but those around me as well. They are those moments that only later did I come to recognize the power and presence of Spirit in our lives. They are those moments that help us to live more peacefully in this world with the assurance of yet another.
One such experience that comes to mind was during a recent parapsychology expo. I had gone not to speak this time, but instead simply to meet and make a connection with others, to enjoy the company of friends, and to browse the many vendors and their wares. It was merely to be a fun outing with the expectation of nothing more. Still, whenever I allow a divine Spirit to lead the way in my life, amazing things can happen and this event would prove to be no different. Once again, I would come to recognize a higher power and presence that I simply refer to as Spirit.
I had been speaking with an acquaintance of mine who was volunteering as a greeter when another woman anxiously approached us. She was obviously upset over something and wanted to know who was “in charge” of the event. After a few minutes of our trying to calm her down long enough to hear what it was that was troubling her, I turned to her and asked, “I’m sorry, but did you just lose someone who was in hospice?” Shocked by my comment, she stood stunned in the moment, and I quickly apologized for asking such a personal question. Then again, we were at a psychic convention and she did come looking for a way to heal through some greater insight of eternal life. “How did you know that?” While still upset over an earlier experience, she wanted to know the answer to her question, but we were interrupted with her being guided to the event coordinator. It would be sometime later before we would coincidentally bump into one another again.
Later, a friend suggested I join her for a speaker’s presentation and while I really wasn’t interested in the topic, a thought came to me that I should attend and my conscious self accepted the invitation. When we entered the room, I noticed the only seats available were directly in front of the woman to whom I had spoken earlier. After a hug and some further conversation, she thanked me for giving her what she was longing for, something that she didn’t feel she had received earlier – a way to heal through some greater insight of eternal life or the validation of her mother’s recent passing during hospice care.
Divine messages like that one have been given many times before much in the same way, especially when greatly needed. While I am not a professional psychic, there are moments that still surprise me, moments when Spirit speaks and acts or lives through me. I may not always consciously know what it is that I am hearing or even saying until afterwards, but I am always amazed and humbled by the experience. Even my husband, who uses his own gifts much in the same way, recently commented on how much more intuitive I am becoming. I say that not because ego wishes to boast, but instead to share with you that not only can each of us be the instrument or embodiment of Spirit, but we can also improve our own innate abilities. We can develop our intuitive senses and learn how to better hear the inner voice of wisdom and love. We can make a clearer connection with our higher self and with Spirit through time, devotion, and practice. It is a blessing to know that I am opening up more to a higher consciousness and to the power and presence of Spirit in my life, even though I am still trying to recognize all those moments. I am still trying to remain open to Spirit, and to follow Spirit’s lead. When an unexpected thought or vision comes to mind, I need only recognize it, and then be the instrument in which a wise and loving spirit works in our world. I am happy to note as well that without my friend’s suggestion to attend that particular presentation, I might not have had the chance to meet with the woman again. There were thousands of people coming and going throughout the large event that day and finding anyone a second time would have been nearly impossible. It reminds me that we must also recognize those opportunities presented to us, as we are surely being guided in our life. We need only learn to recognize the invisible hands of Spirit pointing the way to a happier and more fulfilling life.
Another similar instance occurred at a friend’s holiday party. A woman just happened to sit next to me whose name was similar to that of my daughter’s. It was the icebreaker to our meeting and we chatted throughout the evening. After getting to know one another a little, she mentioned that she was having a little trouble meditating with any success. It was in that moment that an image came to the back of my mind of our glider lawn chair and I simultaneously asked, “Do you have a glider at your home?” With an unexpected nod, I simply suggested she try rocking in the glider to meditate. It was my use of the word glider that caught my husband’s attention. I had not given the word itself any thought, only it’s meaning. For rocking back and forth in a glider or rocking chair, walking, or utilizing some other form of meditation in motion is a wonderful way in which to achieve a more peaceful state of being. The body is busy while the mind is free to go where it wants. It was just a brief message, but a very practical suggestion that could be of help to her, and I was happy to be the voice of such a helpful Spirit.
Having a real and practical relationship with Spirit and/or your higher self is not only possible, but one that each of us is capable of. We need only be open to divine possibilities and be mindful of those moments when a wise and loving Spirit speaks and acts or lives in our world. We need only include both prayer and meditation in our daily routine to practice recognizing both our higher self and that of a wise and loving Spirit. Remember prayer is speaking to Spirit and meditation is listening to Spirit. We need only be open to a wise and loving power and presence in our lives, and then trust and follow Spirit’s lead. Remember Spirit is always with you. You need only be open to developing a closer relationship with Spirit. Be open to infinite possibilities, divine wisdom, and unconditional love. Make those vital connections to both others and Spirit. For it is only when we meet and make a caring connection with others that Spirit lives through you and through me. Spirit is always with us, but we may not realize it until afterwards, after right words are spoken, after right actions are demonstrated, or after lives are changed through wisdom and love. We need only be open to following Spirit’s lead in our lives to have a real and practical relationship with Spirit.
Another more recent experience came about during a visit one evening from a couple and their son. As always, it was a delight to see them, even though it was a little late in the day. My husband and I had already settled in for the night watching television in our pajamas while munching on popcorn when the doorbell rang. “Come on in. Glad you could stop by,” each of them pausing in the foyer, before I had to ask for a hug from the young man. There was a slight hesitation from him, but I quickly dismissed it thinking he was just coming into that age when hugging had become awkward. It was not so long ago when he would have come up to me with arms wide open, but he was a teenager now and it appeared teenagers do not act as they once would.
After some pleasantries, we began talking about what they had been doing while I made some more popcorn. At some point during our visit, I remember thinking to myself that theirs was such a wonderful family unit, one where the parents had always been active and caring and one where the children had always known they were valued and loved. His parents had always tried to be the best they could be and the son thrived from all of their efforts. For they had made that vital connection between them that said, “Yes, you are important. Yes, you are valued and loved.” It was then in that moment when I looked at the young man and commented, “You have such great parents.” It was then that Spirit spoke and I did not recognize it or the importance of the message.
Soon after our visit, I received a call from a mutual friend. Surprised by her call, as we don’t often chat by phone, I asked why she rang. “Oh, I just thought I’d call and catch up with you.” We spoke first of the weather and upcoming events in our lives, and then I briefly mentioned our night visitors. “You know the son just found out he was adopted,” she told me. I couldn’t believe it. “What, I thought he already knew.” She told me that apparently the time just never felt right for the parents until only just recently. I was so surprised to hear the news. We had always known, at times even heard the parents speak openly about the adoption, and just assumed their son already knew.
Life is so full of surprises, but to a child this was perhaps one that might have had him recently wondering about a great many things, especially about his parents. With so many unknowns in this young man’s life, I can only pray that he discovers the most important truths of all – that he is important, that he is valued and loved, and that yes, he has “great parents.” Of all that could have been said to him that evening, the most needed message of all was expressed. It was then when the moment presented itself that Spirit spoke and I did not recognize it or the importance of the message until afterwards. Consciously or not, there are those moments when Spirit speaks and acts or lives through each of us. It was not until my later reflection of their visit, after the conversation with our mutual friend, a messenger herself, and after a divine message was given that I once again recognized the power and presence of Spirit in each of our lives.
Spirit is always with us, whether we recognize it or not, whether or not we allow Spirit to speak and act or live through us. Spirit was there when the parents decided to adopt the child. Spirit was there when they recently spoke to their son and will be there in the years ahead. They need only continue to be great parents, those that assure their son he is important to them and that he is valued and loved. Spirit was there when the friend decided to call me and there when a vital reminder was spoken.
Spirit is always present in our life, in every moment of it, whether we realize it or not. When things occur as they should or are meant to be, even when no one recognizes a greater power and presence. When Spirit speaks and acts or lives through each of us. It is something I am still learning to be mindful of. It is a phenomenon of this world that assures me of yet another. It is life as it can be, if only we allowed a wise and loving Spirit to work through you and through me.
Open yourself up to a greater power and presence. Connect with a higher consciousness or divine mind. Welcome Spirit into your life, and surely you will come to recognize those magical if not miraculous moments when Spirit works through you and through me. If you have a similar story when you or someone you know was the embodiment of a wise and loving spirit, please don’t hesitate to leave a reply. For we learn and grow the most when once we meet and make a connection. Thanks for visiting and I hope you’ll return for more guest interviews and writings of a spiritual nature.
Author Note: When I use the word “Spirit,” I am referring to that greater power and presence or greater something that man calls God, Source, Infinite Intelligence, Greater Spirit, Holy Spirit, One of All, Collective Consciousness, or Divine Mind, among others yet. It is also important to note that our own higher self or spirit within is part and whole of that same power and presence. For we are those sparks, individual expressions, or that which is part of a greater energy, force, or spirit that is Creation itself. – – Trinda Latherow
