Visit Greece without Leaving Florida
Visit Tarpon Springs!
The historic waterfront town of Tarpon Springs is just 20 minutes north of Clearwater, Florida and has a way of transporting you thousands of miles away to a coastal village in Greece.
After the discovery of natural sponge beds in the early 1900s, Greek sponge divers arrived in Tarpon Springs, a community at the northern end of the St Petersburg/Clearwater area. Just 45 minutes north of St. Petersburg, 10 minutes north of Palm Harbor, and found along the shore of the Gulf of Mexico, Tarpon Springs was named for the fish found in abundance in nearby waters.
Tarpon Springs is also is known as the “sponge capital of the world,” and for its 51 miles of waterfront allure. In addition, its charming downtown center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors to the Historic District can stroll along brick streets while browsing in art galleries, antiques stores, and specialty shops housed in buildings dating from the late 1800s. For the culturally-minded, the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts and Cultural Centers offer theater, art and historical exhibits, concerts, and other quality programs.
The main attraction of Tarpon Springs then became its famous Sponge Docks, which are set along the Anclote River. The Greek heritage is still strong here, if you’re even remotely of Hellas heritage, you’ll probably discover a cousin or two in this town. Dodecanese Boulevard, which follows the riverfront, is lined with gift shops that carry everything from souvenirs to home goods, natural sponges to olive oil soap. Wander a few blocks south and you’ll find several antique shops on downtown’s Tarpon Avenue.
Authentic Greek restaurants, including Mama’s Greek Cuisine, Hellas and Mykonos, which all smell too good to resist. Stop in for a honey-infused pastry and strong coffee or a hearty dinner. At the Tarpon Springs Aquarium, pet the baby sharks and stingrays and learn about the sea life of the nearby Gulf of Mexico. You may also wish to visit St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, an ornate, historic building off Pinellas Avenue and St. Michael’s Shrine, a small community chapel at the corner of Grand and Hope.
The Story of St. Michael’s Shrine:
The prayer below comes from a woman who built St. Michael a shrine in Tarpon Springs, Florida.
In 1939, Maria Tsalichi’s young son Steve was gravely ill. He had fallen into a coma and was expected to die. Maria reported, afterwards, that her son had awoken and spoken (she thought he was delirious) to say, “Yes, but my mother has no money,” and then to her: “Taxiarchis (Archangel St. Michael) wants you to build his shrine.” As this conversation continued, Maria realized that her son’s words were coming from another place and promised to build the shrine. After her son recovered she kept her promise, although it took a lot of faith and perseverance as she was not a wealthy woman.
If you are ever in the vicinity, stop by. Light a candle and settle into stillness. You may sense the singing vibration that lives there and come away renewed, restored, and grateful. A practiced ritual calls for you to light a candle in the chapel once a week for nine weeks. However, you need not go to Tarpon Springs for it to be effective. You may visit your own place of worship or sacred space at home, light a candle, and follow the directions there, since God and St. Michael are everywhere you believe them to be.
